Keeping Your Silver Stock Sorted

Preventing Big Tangles.

After you have been silversmithing for a while, you build up a large quantity of different types and gauges of wire, sheet, and bezel.

Here is an example of what can happen if I let myself get disorganized. This is a big mass of silver wire, all tangled up, and of various different types and gauges.

I've found that for me, the best way to keep things organized is to use gallon sized ziplock bags for storing different silver stock.

To keep the different bags sorted, I use an accordian file folder, available from just about any office supply store.

One of the nice things about the gallon size freezer bags is that they come with a little white panel on them where you can write what the contents enclosed contents are.

I store the whole thing inside of a portable plastic file cabinet with a handle on the top to make it easy to transport when I teach classes at different locations.

See how handy these slide right in?
