Graphic stuff I like.
Written work:
Strangers In Paradise
Amazing series, for those of you who don't yet know it. Buy it, read it. Katchoo is the coolest character around, save perhaps Hothead Paisan. "Strangers In Paradise" covers the lives and adventures of a small group of people who are trying to survive life, and mostly succeeding, with the help of the occasional bit of explosives.
Tintin! Herge revolutionized comics, and although some of his material now is a bit dated, it's so beautiful. When he draws a Jaguar, it has the knock-off spinners on the wheels; when he draws a DeHavilland Mosquito you can see the intakes for the radiators on the inboard leading-edge of the wing. These comics formed a large part of my childhood.
CEREBUS The best indie comic ever. Byzantine medieval comic which reflects currents in our world (particularly politics) and includes some of the finest parodies of other comics and literature you'll ever see.
Poison Elves Take a half stick of Elfquest and add three cups of Cerebus and maybe one teaspoon of Lone Wolf and Cub and one of Usagi Yojimbo. Mix well, bake until brown. Turn on your stereo, put Sisters Of Mercy on and turn it up to 11. Put the loaf in a 500 kilo safe, and drop it out the window right on the head of Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and you'll have Poison Elves in a nutshell.
Maus won a special Pulitzer, and it deserved the award. Buy it. Read it.
Phil Foglio is a genius. I love everything he's ever done, although Buck Godot and Xxxenophile (not available on his website, seemingly, although you can find it at Blowfish (yes it's *THAT* kind of book)) are particular favorites. His attention to detail, although very different from, say, Herge, is nevertheless amazing. The calendars in the background have scenes from his other works and the visual puns, particularly the titles on bottles of alcohol, are brilliant.
Video:
Bubble Gum Crisis! Gorgeous cyberpunk women in battlesuits with guns on motorcycles saving the world from the evil cyborgs. YESSSSSSSS.
San Lupin: The Castle Of Cagliostro. Brilliant spy/thief movie, funny, daring, and with some of the most wonderful, overdone characters ever.
Arcadia Of My Youth. Strange, beautiful futuristic anime tying Captain Harlock, a WWII fighter pilot, together with his many-generations-descendent of the same name, who builds and captains a starship in a daring escape from their evil overlords.
