In a joint project, the Wyoming Air National Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Cheyenne Airport Board began radar service for the Cheyenne Regional Airport as of February 28, 1996. The radar system is a Mobile Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) with the capability of providing Precision Approach Radar (PAR) approaches and Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) approaches. Full instrument Flight Rule (IFR) service will be provided. In addition to the use of radar for the control of IFR aircraft, Cheyenne Approach will provide the following basic radar service for Visual Flight Rule (VFR) aircraft. 1. safety alerts, 2. traffic advisories, 3. limited radar vectoring (on a work load permitting basis). Radar service will cover an approximate 60 nautical mile radius with vertical limits to 12,000 Mean Sea Level (MSL). Cheyenne Approach Control will utilize the following frequencies VHF-124.55 and UHF-269.0. Pilots are encouraged to use the radar facility for radar approach communication and to practice simulated instrument approachers. The radar facility will be operated by the Department of Defense and the Wyoming Air National Guard. Radar service will be available to pilots only during the times which the Air Traffic Control Tower is in operation, which is 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week.
