Fury in a Bag

Readying an explosive charge to remove a beach obstruction, this Frogman attaches the package of explosives to the steel crosspieces. These prepackaged explosives are carried in the canvas bag seen in the water, at the left. This floating pack is towed behind the swimmer as he swims ashore. After the charges have been set, all the swimmers but two return to the pickup boat. At a smoke signal the remaining two swimmers detonate the charges from a safe distance and then return to the craft. Their charges ar fired by timers to give the men plenty of chance to get away from the big blast and resulting shock waves. Many of the beaches of Korea were thus cleared by the UDT units with the fleet, as were invasion beaches of World War II, where the Frogmen first went into action.
