They Meet Their Trade-Mark

Future Frogmen, recruited from every branch of the naval service (all are volunteers): electronics technicians. stewards, hospital corpsmen, cooks, and seamen get a first look at their future trade-marks - the swim fins and glass-front face mask. Every year about 150 of these volunteers report to the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia, for training. Both officers and men are volunteers, and they all work closely together, doing the same work. About 15 per cent of the 150 are promptly screened out for either physical or mental reasons. The rest at once start on a two months' course of the toughest training ever cooked up for a guy to fight his way through. The first six days and nights of "Hell Week" consist of long hikes through swamps, mud, surf, and jungle mined with explosives and other booby traps. A three-mile run at dawn starts each day. Hell Week separates the "frogs" from the "tadpoles" in a hurry.
