Future Frogmen Learn How

Dressed in the traditional all-rubber suits and wearing their face masks, these student "frogs" learn how to rescue an injured comrade and carry him to safety. They must be as much at home in the water as ashore, under all conditions and temperatures. As late as early December the trainees take daily plunges in the chilly waters off the coast, wearing only swimming trunks. During the rugged Hell Week indoctrination, about 40 per cent of the applicants drop out of the race, and by the time the whole course has been completed, about 65 of the original 150 applicants remain as "veterans" of the schooling. The Hell Week horrors are designed to weed out those who are not basically fitted, physically or mentally, for the life and work of the Frogmen. It saves much time and money to eliminate from further training those who might not measure up to the rigid UDT requirements later on.
