FROGMEN

beach training

Putting It into Practice

Once the Frogmen have learned how to swim well and strongly, and use the suits and masks and other equipment in the safety of the training tanks, they go into the surf to try them out in actual practice and under all sorts of conditions. Note that several of these men have removed their flippers, for better walking ashore, and carry them in their hands. During World War II, the very existence of the Frogmen was confidential, so little was known of their service. The first volunteers were called to duty on May 6, 1943, to help clear the invasion beaches of Sicily. Since then they have become a regular part of the Navy, important to its success upon many occasions. At Assan Beach, Guam, UDT units blasted 620 coral cribs, using 10,600 pounds of explosives. At Balikpapan they cleared two thousand feet of important beach, and at Omaha Beach, Normandy, they blew six complete gaps through the heavy German obstacles preventing invasion. In this last fantastic mission, over 40 per cent of the Frogmen were put out of action in the first half-hour, but their buddies completed the task with great heroism and skill to make the successful invasion possible.
