Learning to Outsmart the Surf

Although swimming and demolition are important lessons that the trainees must learn - and for keeps - rubber-boat handling and launching is also important, as are long trips in the bobbing craft to develop paddling muscles. Here some trainees, each wearing an inflatable "invasion" life belt about his waist, wait for a lull in the breaking surf to launch their training craft into the calmer waters beyond. Further out, another boat and its passengers await them. They must know, not only how to launch such a craft through pounding surf, but how to bring it in to the beach through the combers, often a far more tricky maneuver than the launching.
