And in he goes with a mighty splash, trailing the safety rope and the air hose behind him. The diver wearing the mask on the opposite page (page 36) starts his descent below for survey of the aircraft wreckage. This is what is called "shallow-water diving gear" as compared with the gear of suited and helmeted divers usually associated with deep-sea diving. It permits greater freedom of action, but the diver is able to go down to only a limited depth due to pressure; entirely sufficient for such operations in comparatively shallow waters along the coast. The safety rope is used to return to the ship and also to keep the air hose from becoming over-pulled. It is attached to the air hose every few feet and prevents the air hose from being pulled out of the mask if snagged upon an obstruction.
