2003 paddling

Fall, 2003. Modernization of Horsetooth dams have been completed and the reservoir is slowly filling with water. It will be filled up to the maximum level for dam testing by the end of April 2004. The access to the reservoir is still limited to its southern end (South and Inlet Bays). The Centenial Road is open but the Satanka Cove area near Horsetooth Dam remains closed.

I am paddling my Surfrigger quite often on Horsetooth since I have bough the annual pass. Typically, I paddle the entire length of the reservoir starting at South Bay unless I get involve in shooting pictures in one of the coves.

South Eltuck Cove in the northern parth of the reservoir. A view towards the Horsetooth Dam and some old stone fence posts above the cove.

Horsetooth Reservoir November 1, 2003.

Certainly, it looked like a first day of winter paddling season: fog, drizzle, frost and some snow. First time in a dry suit. A lot of ducks.

Quarry Cove on left and South Eltuck Cove below.
