Sat - January 14, 2006South Platte River: A Classic Run from Evans to Kuner January 14, 2006. River flow ~500cfs at Kersey. The air temperature was only 18F at Greeley in the early morning but it warmed up pretty fast to 50s. Rob Bean joined me in his Wenonah J-201 canoe. I was paddling Sea Wind. We started about 10:30 am from Evans Riverside Park and needed about 2:45 h to cover 15.1 miles to Kuner. It was a very pleasant run with two short stops at diversion dams. Connie and Dax helped us with a shuttle. John Murphy arrived late to Evans and launched his Ruahine Opus about 30 minutes after us. He didn't catch us but was just s few minutes behind at Kuner. I am sure he had a good workout on the river. I had a close encounter with a wildlife: 3" fish jumped into a cockpit of my boat. Evans to Kersey and further to Kuner is a popular stretch of the river. It can be paddled all year around except summer months. The Poudre Paddlers Canoe and Kayak Club, Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club and Rocky Mountain Canoe Club usually organize a joint trip there in March. The next club trip is planned for March 18, snow date March 25. Everybody is welcome! Dave Allured is also planning Evans-Kuner icebreaking trip on February 18 (snow date February 25); see the RMCC trip schedule.
