My Land Crew: Worf

Worf, the Newfoundland
Worf is the older of our two Newfoundland dogs. On the picture he is sitting on a porch of an old cabin in Saratoga, WY during my North Platte River paddling in April of 2002.

He accompanied me on many trips and used to swim in most of my paddling waters: rivers and lakes of Colorado, Dismal River in Nebraska, North Platte River in Wyoming, Colorado River in Utah, San Marcos and Guadelupe Rivers and Gulf of Mexico in Texas during my safari training in winter 2001, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. He prefers to swim in rivers with a strong current. Lakes are just good for wading.

Since I own only solo boats we really never paddled together except once. In July of 2001 we drove to Michigan to pick up my Sea Wind from Verlen Kruger. I did my first paddling with a new canoe on Platte River flowing to Lake Michigan. Part of this paddling I did with Worf sitting behind my seat. With his 130 lb the Sea Wind was out of trim but Worf behaved with a dignity and kept a perfect balance.

According to a diagnosis of our ex-vet Worf supposed to be dead about 3 years ago due to an advanced arthritis in his elbows... Well, we changed the vet, added glucosamine and other supplements to Worf's diet, then we added a sweet Newfy girl, Dax, to his companion. He is still a happy dog with some help of rimadyl, though his activities are now mainly limited to a backyard.

Worf is an extraordinary example of Newfounland personality and a wise dog.
