Sat - February 5, 2005Solo paddler, Solo photographer - Shooting with Programmable Selftimer![]() As
a solo paddler I always have a dilemma how to shoot pictures of myself when
paddling. In my recent paddling on Beaver Pond I tried a new approach.
I set up my digital Canon 10D camera on a tripod on a shore. A new gadget, Canon timer remote controller TC-80N3 got connected to the camera. That was a key of my photo session. I set the controller to 1 minute delay and then to a sequence of 25 shots every 15 second. I pressed a start button, jumped into kayak and started to paddle circles in front of the camera. It was just before sunset. I was hoping for a good light. Unfortunately, the low sun didn't cooperate, hid behind a cloud and pictures didn't turn very well. Anyway, I got 5 shots of a paddler, i.e. myself, within a frame. It was not so easy to paddle and turn around in the field covered by the camera. A challenge wasn't just limited to catching the paddler. There were other important elements in these pictures: a wake, tree and cloud reflections. Obviously, I need to shoot much more frames with a higher frequency. No problem with a digital camera, but I wouldn't be able to afford that photo session with a film camera. The posted picture should be considered as a working shot. I am planning more shooting with the timer/controller including the camera mounted on my Sea Wind canoe. I've bought my TC-80NC controller from Adorama through amazon.com. There is a nice review of this device and its features in The Luminous Landscape. Great website with spectacular images and good tips for digital photography! |
