March 25, 2006. I was paddling down the Suwannee River during the WaterTribe Ultimate Florida Challenge. At the end of that day I was still upstream of Branford.
At sunset I passed the road bridge to Mayo.
Then, I saw a strange bridge in front of me. It looked like some remains of an old broken bridge, so I proceeded with caution. There was just a single span of a drawbridge in the middle of the river. I couldn't see any constructions on the shore that would possibly connect to it.
I managed to shot a single picture with my Pentax Optio WP when approaching the bridge, but I didn't have time to adjust my regular settings or exposure, so I really got something like a picture of a ghost from the past.
Later, I found some information about that bridge with two pictures on the site devoted to old Florida railroads written by Don Hensley
The Rise and Fall of Florida RY. Part II: The Suwannee and San Pedro Railroad
This photo of the Drew Bridge was taken by myself in 1986. Bought jointly by Laffayette &
Suwannee Counties for possible use as a road bridge, its been sitting undisturbed in the open
position since 1920. A recent photo by a friend in the area shows little change. This bridge is
operated by a crank in the middle of the span.
Do you have any more information about that drawbridge or had occasion to examine it?
