Scouting San Marcos River: Palmetto-Gonzales

After one and half day of driving we arrived to San Marcos on Tuesday night. South eastern Colorado was very windy. I needed additional ties for my boat. Weather in Texas was much nicer for driving.

On Wednesday I paddled San Marcos River from the Palmetto Park to Gonzales, a stretch of the river I will be paddling during the first night of Texas Water Safari. The upstream approach to the Palmetto Bridge along a right short shore is almost clear: a tree was cut down.

There are several passable obstacles on on the river below Palmetto and one logjam growing green below highway 90A that required portage on the left side. The landing above Gonzales Dam was partially blocked by logs and it was quite difficult to get out. Fortunately, there was a rope there. The "short" portage around the dam was somewhat longer this year with a safe put in further downstream from the dam.

The day was hot!!! I finished my run with a really bad headache. As usual heat and humidity will be my main problem during the safari.

Otherwise, paddling was quite nice: a lot of birds, turtles, and two meetings with pig families.
