The MDPC's forty boarders come from a disbanded Quarren mercenary unit, the Wandering Shrikes. The mercenary company was composed of New Republic marines who had completed their tour of duty and retired. As a whole, the boarders are highly disciplined and extremely gruff, and are well known to be the least friendly members of the MDPC. Although they still carry the honor of New Republic warriors, the Quarren tend to view things from a monetary standpoint, and dislike taking risks for small rewards. The unit knows its way around ships, and its members are well drilled in boarding and security techniques. The Quarren tend to keep aloof from the rest of the crew, and socialize mostly amongst themselves.
The boarders keep a wary eye on the Werbol gunners, who have previously picked several fights with the ex-marines. The fights have since subsided, and the boarders retain a healthy respect for the tough little gunners. Still, almost everyone is aware that the Quarren and Werbols still shake with one hand, and hold a charged stun baton in the other. Due to careful pre-cruise scheduling, the two teams rarely come into contact. However, future conflicts may occur on long voyages, when contact is unavoidable and the Werbols have had a long time to work on the Quarren's nerves.
The boarding crew is led by the Boarding Captain, Lieutenant Mul'ruhka. There are six boarding teams, each composed of a Sergeant and five Privates. Of the remaining three Privates, one serves as Lieutenant Mul'ruhka's aide, and two more are designated pinnance security.
Once the Silver Hawk is able to carry a pinnance, the boarding team will have the option of transportation by the #2 Warpod "Lamprey". This 20 meter long boarding craft is operated by three humans: the pilot Midshipman Gulfen and his two gunners, Midshipman Harries and Midshipman Ulktak.
For situations where the Silver Hawk will use communications jammers, Captain Quinn has devised a flashing strobe semaphore for visual communication. The boarders will be equipped with computer encoded ultrasonic transmitters to trade short-range messages.
The boarding team is complemented by eight Verpine hatchling droids and thirty MerenData TS-Arach droids. During boarding operations, hatchlings are launched after the Lamprey has attached to the target. They proceed to cut holes into vital areas of resistance, especially the cockpit and gun wells. Once this is accomplished, the hatchlings insert stun grenades to clear the immediate area, followed by folded up TS-Arach droids, which the crew calls "tweeters". The tweeters proceed to sweep the ship, using their motion and lifeform sensors to locate and stun any crewers. Each tweeter is equipped with an upgraded blaster pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition, a comlink with video feed and an ultrasonic communications device. While they aren't particularly bright, the tweeters follow a simple model of rendering unconscious any lifeform that is not a boarder. Due to their roots as agricultural patrol droids, the tweeters categorize boarders as "good bugs" and everyone else as "bad bugs".
A thousand thanks to Scott Wegener for drawing the awesome picture displayed above.
