It was a beautiful dawn on Corellia. As expected, the Traxx model showed me the problems in the Bounty's energy map. The ship was carrying ions with it into hyperspace. Once the random harmonics were dissipated, the particles were moving up the low energy pressure of the plasma conduits and then accelerating backwards along the edge of the hyperspace envelope. The ions picked up more and more speed each time through the loop, until they had enough momentum to scatter out of the low pressure area. The microcrystalline dopant lattices in the hyperdrive cradle were shot full of holes. Without any shielding against the subspace harmonics, the bulkheads were starting to vibrate badly. The problem was serious enough that I estimate the Bounty would have experienced a major hyperdrive failure in another six months. The gunship would have probably been obliterated as its hyperspace envelope collapsed during transit. In my mind, that finishes my obligations to Murky Depths Transport Systems. The company is solidly positioned to get more repair contracts from the New Republic Navy. Admiral Groves seemed impressed with my ion channel design. Instead of yanking the bulkheads and refitting the Bounty with more static dissipation vanes, their technicians can simply install some specially tuned distortion generators. After a few high-to-low cycles, the generators will have filtered out the accelerated ions, and the hyperdrives will work fine. The particles will be shunted towards the hyperspace envelope at a perpendicular angle. The "hard" impact will disperse them normally. More importantly, finishing my obligations to MDTS also concludes my obligations to my father. I know he doesn't see it that way. We had a confrontation over Murky Depths Privateering Company... perhaps our final one. He didn't understand when I accepted the mission to Arroyo de Muerto, so I can see where MDPC wouldn't make sense to him either. Quite simply, I am not going to sit on the sidelines while this war changes the galaxy out from underneath me. I know my father believes that the right way to fight this war was through my commission in the Navy. Sometimes I wonder if he isn't right. But that path is gone now and the war remains. I have even made peace with the idea that there is money to be made in fighting it. Garvu Quinn OOC Note: Earned 5 character points for the adventure. [ Back ] | ||||||||||||
