Stubborn and courageous, the MDPC's twenty-eight Werbol gunners are both a tremendous military asset and a Ronto sized headache. The little blue crustaceans can be seen scurrying about the gunnery wells of the Silver Hawk, clad in MDPC leather jackets and wearing blast helmets with eyestalk holes cut in the top. The Werbols are constantly armed with two blaster pistols and two vibrodaggers, which they occasionally wave around when overexcited. While most species would underestimate the dimunitive blue aliens, the Werbols' talent for teamwork delivers spectacular gunnery results. The Silver Hawk's holographic targeting displays have special settings for aquatic species, which helps to compensate for the Werbols' short visual range and difficulty seeing color. The rowdy little gunners have a great talent for herding targets with fire, and for making precision strikes in just the right sequence. Individually, each Werbol is only an average gunner, but together, they achieve a level of teamwork that most species are hard pressed to match.
Led by the head ion gunners, Ziff and Zeff, the Werbol gunners stick together like mynocks on power cables. They have a superiority complex about their gunnery skills, believing that they are unrivaled in the galaxy. While their bravado is mostly amusing, the Werbol gunners sometimes belittle and harass the rest of the crew, and their delusions of invincibility get them into trouble with much larger opponents. For their part, the Werbols are generally obnoxious but well meaning. They believe that roughhousing, carousing and friendly insults are the best way to enjoy your comrades. Although all of the Werbols can understand Basic, only Ziff can speak it with any fluency. The de facto language aboard the Silver Hawk is Mon Calamari, which all of the crewers understand.
It appears that the meanings of many Werbol phrases are lost in the translation, but they remain fond of shouting in badly broken Basic at each other and the rest of the crew. The reigning favorites are "You're fired!" and anything involving the word "pudu". To make matters more confusing, these phrases can mean anything from a congenial complement to a furious insult, and the correct inflection is usually lost in the language barrier. It took the crew a while to acclimate to the Werbols' unusual habits and seemingly belligerent attitude, but everyone now gets along peacefully, mostly by shaking their heads with a chuckle.
All gunners, regardless of location, report to Commander Tessadrone for instructions. A Werbol gunnery Sergeant is stationed at every major weapons emplacement except the ion cannons, which are supervised by Master Sergeants Ziff and Zeff.
Quotes:
"What say oh-so-odorous Imperial dogs? We show them wrath of oh-most-thunderous Werbol gunners!" (Zeff)
"FI-AARRRRR!" [assorted whooping] "Show them some attack, HA-HA!"
"Smelly Quarren think so tough? You want some Werbol piece, wiggley-wig?"
